Malaga Crime Management Forum
Malaga Crime Management Forum“Working together to prevent and reduce crime, increase community safety and enhance the quality of life for the Malaga business community”
The Malaga Crime Management Forum (MCMF) was established in 2005 as a partnership between the Malaga and Districts Business Association (MDBA), the City of Swan and Ballajura Police. In July 2007, following a lengthy scoping and development process the MCMF applied for and was successful in obtaining a grant under the National Community Crime Prevention Programme. The MCMF received $105,000 of Federal funding through the Attorney’s General Office. These funds are managed and administered by the City of Swan. Recently MCMF received an additional $20,000 from the City of Swan in a linked grant to the Regional Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan 2007-2010 The project aims to provide support to the business district to prevent crime and achieve a safer and more secure community. This project is an extension of an existing community safety project focussed on the Commercial suburb of Malaga. It aims to build upon and expand the scope of the existing project with a focus on engagement with communities affected by crime and antisocial behaviour. Community engagement will involve a campaign of information; advice and enlistment of local business to ensure that they take appropriate target hardening measures that will deter criminal activity consistent with security principles of deter, detect and respond. At that level, the primary objectives will be to; - Improve the feeling of safety and security in the area - Discourage criminal and antisocial behaviour The programme is designed to bring the 3 parties together to implement a range of strategies to reduce crime and anti- social behaviour in Malaga The project will build on initial work carried out by MCMF following the development of an MOU between the 3 parties. The MDBA leads the project and provides direct links to its membership of more than 200. The Police provide statistics for evaluation purposes, expert advice to businesses and information as to the use of CCTV cameras in ‘Hot Spots’. The City provides expertise in project management, employment of project officer and managing the funds for the project. The City’s Malaga Business Development Officer provides access to his communication tools and business contacts. It is proposed to develop strategies which will ensure engagement of the whole business community leading to the self sustainability of the project by the partners. The programme contains - Crime prevention strategies – CCTV cameras - Anti hoon driving measures through reporting of this behaviour to Police - Illegal dumping of rubbish - Anti graffiti campaign and reporting of graffiti - Encouraging engraving of equipment and property - Erection of crime prevention signage - On site crime prevention and target hardening advice - Developing crime prevention and business security checklist - Encouragement of street numbering of premises to improve response times - Local email for Malaga businesses to report “local” crime to. The cameras purchased by MCMF that have been and will continue to be installed are able to track movement, operate with night vision and capture data on a 30 day continuum which can be easily downloaded for our local Police. The captured data can and will be used as an evidentiary and detection tool to assist the Police in the apprehension of offenders in the Commercial area. The cameras will be extended following the initial trail phase. For more information please contact the MCMF Project Officer 9248 2526 or projectofficer@malagab2b.com.au
