BEING a good guy is about more than selling electrical and furniture items for The Good Guys Malaga.

The business also helps charity and community organisations. The Good Guys Malaga opened in April 2008, and in its first financial year of operating it helped more than 100 local groups and schools with donations and sponsorships.

It also supports state charities and organisations through United Way as part of The Good Guys chain of stores.

The beneficiaries this year are the Stitches Megazone at Princess Margaret Hospital, the School Volunteers Program and the RSPCA in Malaga.

These organisations receive 20cents from every purchase made at The Good Guys.

The Good Guys’ support of the Megazone helped pay for a roof over the play area, giving children staying at the hospital a safe area to play outdoors.

Previous beneficiaries have included Foodbank, which provides food to people in need in WA.

The RSPCA sponsorship will be used to pay for a kennel at their Malaga shelter for a year. The Good Guys Malaga and Samsung had previously supported the RSPCA by donating a washing machine so bedding and blankets could be washed.

The Malaga store also sponsors and supports numerous local community and sporting groups. In 2008-09 it supported more than 60 groups with donations and sponsorships for events such as fairs, quiz nights and other fundraisers.

These included the Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club, the Heart Kids Gala Ball, Bali Hugs – which helps underprivileged children in Bali – the Breast Cancer Foundation’s Boobalicious Ball and the Anglican parish of Wongan Ballidu, which helps teach young women life skills. The Good Guys Malaga also supported more than 40 primary and high schools.

Owner David Vicars said the business liked to be involved in the community.

“It’s not just about opening a shop and hoping people will come,” he said.
“You need to support the area.
“We get about four requests a week for donations and we hardly ever deny anyone; where we can, we give.
“It’s not about how many people we help or what marketing leverage we can get, it’s more about what they need to help them.
“It’s about wanting to be part of the community.
“There’s no point sitting back trying to make a profit without being a part of where you are.
“The Good Guys’ mantra is to be part of the community we’re in and support the community.
“We’ve had amazing support from the locals in the 16 months since we opened. We think we offer them something unique.”

The Good Guys Malaga also hosts community groups’ fundraising sausage sizzles every Saturday. Mr Vicars said the store supplied the venue and a barbecue to help groups raise money.

The Churchlands Senior High School music program was one of many groups that had sold sausages at The Good Guys. Funds raised from their sausage sizzles helped pay for an excursion to America.

Mr Vicars said nearly every Saturday was booked out for sausage sizzles but groups interested in holding one could call the store.
